The Seven Hermetic Principles in Modern Life

The Kybalion's seven principles — Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, Gender — are not relics. They are a living map.

Published in 1908 and attributed to 'Three Initiates', The Kybalion distilled what its authors claimed was the core of the ancient Hermetic tradition into seven principles. Whether or not the lineage claim holds up to historical scrutiny, the principles themselves have proven remarkably durable — and remarkably applicable to the texture of ordinary life.

The first principle, Mentalism — 'The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental' — is perhaps the most challenging for the modern reader. It does not mean that the physical world is an illusion, but that consciousness is primary. Before any thing, there is awareness. This is not so far from what quantum physicists have been quietly suggesting for a century.

Correspondence — 'As above, so below; as below, so above' — is the principle most people have heard, even if they don't know its source. It suggests that the patterns we see at one scale of reality repeat at others. The structure of a galaxy mirrors the structure of an atom. The dynamics of a family mirror the dynamics of a nation. Understanding one level illuminates the others.

Vibration tells us that nothing is truly at rest — everything moves, everything vibrates. Modern physics agrees: matter is energy, energy is frequency. The practical implication is that our mental and emotional states are not fixed. They are frequencies that can be shifted, raised, transformed. This is the basis of every practice that works with mood, intention, or energy.

Polarity and Rhythm together describe the oscillating nature of experience. Everything has its opposite; everything swings between poles. The person who understands Rhythm does not panic when the pendulum swings toward difficulty — they know it will swing back. They also learn to 'polarise' themselves at the higher end of any spectrum, transmuting fear into courage, hatred into love, not by suppression but by understanding that these are the same energy at different frequencies.

Cause and Effect is the principle of karma, of consequence, of responsibility. Nothing happens by chance; every effect has a cause. The Hermeticist seeks to be a cause rather than an effect — to act from intention rather than reaction. And Gender, the final principle, speaks to the masculine and feminine principles present in all things: the active and receptive, the projective and the magnetic, the seed and the soil.

Taken together, these seven principles offer not a religion but a lens — a way of reading experience that reveals pattern, meaning, and agency where otherwise there might be only noise.
