Has anyone experienced ego dissolution during deep meditation? How did you integrate it?

I've been meditating seriously for about three years now, mostly Vipassana with some Zen sitting mixed in. Last month something happened that I'm still processing.
About forty minutes into a sit, the usual sense of 'me watching the breath' just... dissolved. There was still awareness, still sensation, but the observer had gone. No fear in the moment — actually a profound sense of relief, like putting down something very heavy.
Coming back was gradual. Over the next few days I felt strangely raw — more emotional than usual, more present, but also a bit unmoored. Like the furniture of my inner life had been rearranged.
I'm curious whether others have had this experience and what helped with integration. Did you speak to a teacher? Did it shift your practice? I'd love to hear from anyone who's been through something similar.

Yes — twice, both during extended retreats. The first time I was completely unprepared and it was destabilising for weeks. The second time I had a teacher I could call, and that made all the difference. Integration support is so underrated in Western meditation culture.

What you're describing sounds like what the Tibetan tradition calls 'rigpa' — pure awareness without a subject. The rawness afterwards is real. I found journalling helped enormously, and deliberately slowing down daily life for a few weeks. Don't rush back to 'normal'.

The 'furniture rearranged' metaphor is perfect. I'd add: be gentle with yourself in conversations. You may find you have less tolerance for small talk or performative interaction for a while. That's normal and it passes.
